LAWN TENNIS.
PROFESSIONAL TUTORS.
CANTERBURY MOVEMENT.
[BT TORtTCXAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] CHRISTCHURCH. Tuesday. A proposal thai the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association should engage a professional tutor, whose services would be avail-, able to members of affiliated dubs ha* begs placed before the association by Ms. T. 4. Quill, the well-known Christchurch tennis player, who has just returned from & trip to th© Old Country. Mr. Quill said.that be was asked by Admiral Sykes, president of the Queen's Club, the leading London tennis club, to bring under the notice of the tennis authorities in New Zealand the fact that several good professional players would ho available to come to the Dominion if sufficient inducement was offered to them. "I think that the absence of professional tuition has ail along been a weak spot in New Zealand tennis." said Mr. Quill, " and I feel sure when the particulars regarding the professionals are placed before Canterbury Association, sufficient support will b? forthcoming to offer the necessary inducement to one or two professional players to come to New Zealand. Ml. Quill added as far as Canterbury- was concerned, he knew of an excellent professional player who would like to come to Christchurch, arid as this player had a strong recommendation from Admiral Sykes, he thought there would be no hesitation in making arrangements to secure his services. Mr Quill saw all the recent tennis at Wimbledon. The chief attraction, he said. was, cf course, Suzanne Lenglen, who is undoubtedly several classes better than any other lady player in the world. As far as the* play of the Australian and New Zealand ladies is concerned, I chink Miss Curtis, of Wellington, ■ ami Miss Lance, of New South Wales, would make quite a good stand against most of the English lady players, but not against all of them.
