TAR AND CARPETS.

Sir,—ls it not possible for the City Council to do something to prevent the present ruination caused to carpets and linoleums through the tarring and sanding of footpaths? There are many cases where people are having their carpets and other floor coverings spoiled through the amount of tar which is left bare on the paths or which oozes through. Some of the paths are in a disgraceful condition and many peoples' houses will soon be the same. ' ,

A PLEA FOR THE POSTMAN. Sir,—-The other day I was driving along the Mount Albert-Onehunga Road, and at the Mount Albert end I met a postman riding a push bike. He had a strong gale blowing against him, had his head nearly on the handlebars, and* was having to put in every ounce of strength he possessed to make headway at all. He had a big bag of mails. I noticed that the wind that day was so strong that the boats were held upwind could not cross the Manukaa Bar, and this man was having to battle against this same wind, and I think it is high time that the postal authorities provided some other means of delivering letters in this sparsely scattered district. Hoping that something will be done to remedy this state of affairs. Sympathy.

WAIHI GRAND JUNCTION COMPANY

Sir, —I have read with great interest the letters that have appeared lately regarding the Waihi Grand J'lhction mine. As a shareholder in that company I strongly endorse every one of the letters. Is it not right that a clear and accurate statement regarding the working of the mine should be issued to shareholders? For over 15 years I have had my savings invested in the company, and up to five years ago I always received a clear statement of affairs "along with at least a 10 per cent, dividend. Since . then the mine seems to have taken the form of a Chinese puzzle, because there have been no satisfactory reports, no dividend— nothing. The" last balance-sheet Is anything but clear. I think it is high time the shareholders got together and. demanded an explanation. ...,,.. ~.>. ' Waxing Up.
