DOUBLE ASSAULT CASE.
TWO MEN BOUND OVER. Trouble between two residents of Thames had its sequel in the Police Court yesterday, before Mr. J. W. Poynion, K.M., when each brought a summons against the other for alleged assault, and each made application to have the other bound over to keep the peace. The Eat ties were Henry Grundy (Mr. Hogen) and Hallyburton Johnstone (Mr. Jordan). The episodes on which the assault charges were based occurred at Ngatea last month. The evidence showed that the parties had had considerable business dealings in the past, and there was illfetling between them. Grundy alleged that when he met Johnstone in a store at Ngatea on the day in question Johnstone shook hands with him, and then knocked him down, rendering him almost insensible. Grundy admitted that when he was waiting on the wharf for the steamer that night Johnstone camo along, and, fearing a repetition of what had occurred earlier in the day, Grundy gave him a " couple of taps" with a stick. For Johnstone it was contended that in the store Grundy had offered greali provocation by certain remarks and by his manner, with the result that Johnstone struck him, but it was contended that there was no provocation for Grundy to strike Johnstone while they were on the wharf. The magistrate considered .that both men were to blame. Both were bound ever in their own recognisances of £200 to keep the peace for 12 months.
