THAMES HARBOUR WORKS.
REQUEST FOR EXPEDITION. [BY TKr.EC.RAPJI. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] THAMES. Wednesday. A deputation of ratepayers waited on Mr. R. Coulter, chairman of the Thames Harbour Board, yesterday in regard to the proposed new harbour improvement scheme. The deputation, which was headed by Messrs. W. Bongavd and A. Bryan, urged the necessity for making an immediate start with the work, especially in view of the dilapidated condition of the old Burke Street Wharf. Mr. Coulter expressed his determination to see the work proceeded with as ex peditiously as possible, having due regard to a safety policy. He referred to rumours in circulation with regard to a new scheme, but he assured them that although a new scheme had been suggested to the board it had not been entertained, and the original scheme would be proceeded with without any unnecessary delay. He bad already interviewed certain financial concerns on the question of the necessary loan. -The board at a meeting last evening decided to instruct the engineer to immediately prepare plans and specifications of the proposed works. It was also decided to call for applications for the position of secretary to the board at a salary of £400 a year.
