WORLD EVENTS IN PICTURES
Owinsr to its established reputation as th« leading illustrated newspaper of the Southern Hemisphere, each issue of th* Auckland Weekly News is eagerly sought by a world-wide circle of readers. This week's publication c* the journal, on sale to-day, is well up to the standard which a discerning publio has become accustomed to expect, the large pictorial section containing a wealth of highly interesting subjects, the whole combining it make an outstanding record of news by photography at home and abroad. Naturally, ' New Zealand items of moment predominate, and these are many and varied. A bright frontispieco is devoted to Boys' Week in Auckland, successfully conducted last week by the Rotary Club, while another page of animated snapshots records all the most important events at the opening of the Spring Racing Carnival last Saturday. Prize-winners at the Manawatu A. and P. Show make another interesting fullpage feature, and the great cycle road race round Mount Egmont is also recorded in detail. Unique pictures of the activities of the Lyall Bay Surf and LifeSaving Club will make a strong genet a. appeal, together with snapshots of the motor-cycle races at Rotorua. The 4 are excellent photographs of the Norwegian whaling vessels, which arrived at Auckland last week, en route for the Ross Sea, while the remarkable collection of New Zealand deer heads for the British Empire Exhibition is also featured. A striking double-page is composed of very fine views taken on a recent visit to Cape Kidnappers, and features the home of the gannets on the rocky and picturesque coastline, where 5000 of the birds uest annually. Recent events and misadventures in Australia include : —The opening of the yachting season on Sydney Harbour; the Caulfield Cup, floods in Victoria and the New South Wales National Rifle Association Meeting. Reproduced on a large scale are splendid photographs of the carnival on the Grand Canal at Venice,, while other pictures from abroad include the great demonstration on Republic Day in Berlin ; amazing results of the depreciation of the German mark, and English beauties prominent in London society.
