OLYMPIA EXHIBITION.

THIS YEAR'S DISPLAY.

IMPORTANT , DEVELOPMENTS

A ROAD SECTION.

For many years past the Annual London Motor Car - Exhibition, though the most representative • international show of its kind in any part of the world/ has - suffered from the fact that the, industry has outgrown the accommodation which i could bo * provided in any single exhibition 'hall in 1 ■* London. In consequence, it had to be : divided into two sections, which\ entailed a certain amount of , inconvenience •' and did not give.so clear an idea of the 'completely comprehensive character of the whole display. 'J- r Now, however, the recent enlargements \ of the famous exhibition building- at Olympia will make it possible to accommodate all the exhibits under one roof. The ! Seventeenth International Motor Exhibition organised by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and • Traders • opens V- son v November 2, and. will close on November 10. It will undoubtedly ; be # .the most, • ":] notable and complete display of £ the pro- . ./ ' ducts of the world's motor industry ever assembled. The ; latest developments in all tyses of ' private : car chassis, carriage • . work, accessories, components and tyres . f ' will be shown., . ' . .'.V" ' '^V. The Private Car' Exhibition ' will be fol- • lowed by the International Commercial Road Transport and Road Development Exhibition which opens 'at Olympia from November 22 to December 1, inclusive. The exhibition will, embrace! the various . types .of petrol,"* petrol-electric, ; > electric, t and steam vehicles for goods ana-passen-ger transport and i fori general utility pur- i.> poses, together with ' their components, accessories and tyres. ■It will ' also include , ;* plant, machinery, and materials <in the construction, maintenance end en- . /' velopment of roads. ' ' Roads and Town Planning. : r - This road section' is "a : new de- /■..■ parture, resulting from ■; the recogni-» tion' by the society of , the Tact that .. the functions of the commercial , motor vehicle manufacturer and of the road ,engineer are in a sense . complimentary to, v one another. 'To secure ; economic trans-.. port, good vehicles and'good roads must • be available. The quality of the latter.;, - inevitably affects the; efficiency;;; of the former. Even though a vehicle may be; so ' strong and so ' well •; designed that V- ,ii will■'< give useful service where roads at® ; . ; bad or , non-existent, the same ' measure of ' j economy ' can never be obtained v under,-, such conditions. Thus, by, encouraging' road improvement, the, motor,£ industry, stimulates" the i demandfor its" own products among all those who require cheap ■ transport. • ' ' " , i; : ;: . Associated with the road section, _ there v will be a town-planning exhibit which is ; • being organised by the National ' Housing ; and Town Placing Council. ' The latest schemes 'and methods of city ; and town : development and road planning and construction will • be shown by ' : means/ •of { models. This branch should be of intense ; world-wide interest, since the possibilities . < : of ; adopting j intelligent _ ; town-planning | schemes are for greater in the younger countries where matters -have ! not already gone so far as to, render improvements _in . street planning" costly < to.'a : ; prohibitive extent. 'It is . sufficiently, obvious that the cost of conducting transport ,in any ' town depends in a great measure on the* adequacy - and intelligent planning of the . streets and thoroughfares. , = ' • •• Public : Service Conferences, • . During • the exhibition the. development and utility of " commercial and public ser-; vice vehicles in all their aspects, together with the latest methods adopted 'in i modern road construct.on to - meet • the coni ditions created by the enormous inorease in- mechanical road traffic , will be dis- : - . cussed at a series of important conferences , ; by public service ' and , trade organisations. representative of practically , all. branches of industrial and commercial activity. ; Nowadays the motor vehicle T : is success^.; fully aplied to practically every service-•; that national and local authorities are re- - ; quired to render in the interests of the : public, whether ' this > may be the provision of travelling; facilities S for passen- , gers or such commonplace , duties as the; , cleansing of . roads, the collection of - household refuse, . or the emptying of . gullies. - v ... The society has also collaborated with V, ; : -- the promoters of the Engineering Exhibition, to be held at 01ympia frmi ( ' August 31 to September 22, with :a:view . to forming a separate representative section of motor-boats, marm'ij and station- ,* ary internal combustion engines . ani accessories. ' t Prior to the Motor-car Exhibition,Olympia will be occupied from October ? 15 to October 20, inclusive, by the Tiroducts of the motor-cycle and • cycle indus- : tries. - This Exhibition is organised by ? the British Cycle , and Motor Circle Manufacturers .; and : Traders' Union, and is . under the patronage of His Majesty i the King, sit ; will be; thoroughly representative of the products of the world's industry, though, naturally, British manufacturers will predominate owing ; to their large number and ;; their 0 exceptionally ■ strong; position. Every ; month new;track' - records and outstanding successes in reliability trials .are placed to the credit of. f ■ r British motor-cycles. The industry re- s^ presents about thirty. million - pounds jflfv capital," and the • employment o» about . a quarter of a million workmen. Its products cover a wide range, v ;| f indndinc ; machines suitable for every rider of : either' sex, between the ag's }£ % *** 60. Engine capacity varies froas .199 **: to 1000 C.C., and speeds from 20 » miles an hour.
