DERBY DAY AT FLEMINGTON. FAVOURITE DEFEATED. FILLY WINS BLUE RIBBON. , A, and N.Z. MELBOURNE. Nov. 3. The Victoria Racing Club's Spring Meeting opened at Flemington in fine weather., The Governor-General, Lord Stadbroke, and the State Governors of Victoria and South Australia were present, and there was an enormous attendance. The course was in perfect order. # ' , , _ The Maiden Plate furnished a great race, which Mitta won by a narrow margin, ihe favourite, Mokenbe, had a bad run in the early portion, and ran fourth. Heroic, carrying 10lb. penalty, won the Maribyruesg Plat© in , good style from Fujisan. Versine just beat Kaiwarra for third place. H. Cairns rode a good race on the winner, who in four starts has nad three wins and one second. Time, lm, is a course record. Heroic cost his owner, Mr. J. R. Corteen, 1800 guineas. Rivoli put up a grent performance in winning the Melbourne Stakes. Maid of the Mist led in the early part of the journey, with Rivoli last to the home turn. When heads were fairly in a line for home Rivoli came with a great run on the outside and snatched victory on the post. Rivoli's time for to-day's race (2m 4Js) equalled •Afagpie's race record. Mimro, rider of Rivoli, was loudly cheered. Rivoli is engaged in the Melbourne Cup with 9st lib. . . . Frances Tressady finished with great dash in the Derby, and won well from Drongo, who battled gamely. Kenilcost. was a moderate third. The favourite. At the nine furlongs post Black Scot took command, and a mile from home he led by two lengths from King Carnival, who was followed by Rahiri. King of Mirth, and Frances Tressady. On coming to the turn for home, the field waa well banchecj. with King Carnival, Black Scot, Rahin, and King of Mirth almost in line forming the leading division. King Carnival was first into the straight, but was immediately tackled by Drongo, with Frances Tressady coming fast on the outside. Drongo looked the probable winner at the distance, where Frances Tressady put. in. her .claim,- and the filly, coming along fast, gained the verdict by three-quarters of a length. Kenilcost finished well four lengths away from Drongo. with Rahiri a neck further back fourth, and King Carnival in fifth place, three ■ leaalhs • from 'Rahiri.' Stormy' Day was last. Time, 2m 33}s.

At CaulfiMd, Sister Olive covered 11 furlongs on the sand without being extended in 2m 871s. ' ACca.uK covered a mile and a-half in 2m 48s. ' . Helicopter went seven furlongs in lm 335.

TROTTING. THE AUCKLAND CLUB. SUMMER PROGRAMME. The Auckland Trotting Club's Summer meeting, which is fixed to take place on December '27, 29 and 31, promises to be the greatest gathering hold at Alexandra Park. The sian allotted in prize money amounts to £13.350. The Auckland Trotting Cup. which holds the leading place on the programme, carries a prize of 432000 and a gold cup of the value of £100. Four other events respectively carry £1000 as stake money, and the other_ events are bo liberally endowed that entries may be expected to be drawn from every quarter of the Dominion. Nominations for all handicap events close on Friday, November 30, at 5 p.m. '
