AUCKLAND SPRING MEETING.

INAUGURAL DAY'S SPORT. ■ f":.' ~''~' r ~ . i.'\ '■'■'.' "'■(••'-- ■' '■■■.-■l,v-' ; •v--4-V'r : '>is* BRIGHT PROSPECTS. The Auckland Racing Club will open its 1 spring meeting to-day, and, with Ellerslie dressed in colours in full keeping with the f season, the setting for' the opening of the ' season on the picturesque grounds is such as , to entrance the eyes. ' >, , ■ Viewed in a racing tense, the prospects of many highly-interesting contests eventuating will be quite assured should fine weather prevail, for the acceptances received in connection with the eight events which form the programme are ; all round of a very satisfactory character. . The field for the Great Northern Guineas will probably number at least a dozen, and the issue in the mile classic event bears so open an appearance that the question of favouritism is still a matter of much uncertainty. Pompey. who won the Avondals Guineas in game fashion at the right and, has trained on well in the meantime, ami a good race is expected from the bay son of Lucullus and Seaquil. Miss Egypt, who was only beaten a head by Pompey in the Avond&le Guineas, after bearing the additional strain of making the pace solid from the start, has apparently thriven well. The visitors. Suggestion and Reremoana, have also accomplished sufficient this season to entitle them to a good place in the settlement of the question. The Welcome Stakes will introduce quite a number of promising youngsters, among which may be specially mentioned Nigger Minstrel. Cawnpore. and Bonogne, who wilt be making their debut in public under silk. Sixteen still remain in the Mitchelaon Cup, end the situation in connection with the mile and a-half race is invested with such interest that some very spirited speculation may be anticipated. The recent victories registered respectively by Surveyor, Highland, Mark Timo. Stork, Marble Bell, and Musketoon place them all m the position of eligible candidates, and altogether it may be said that the race is invested with interest of the very keen order. THE ACCEPTANCES. THE CANTERBURY MEETING. NEW ZEALAND CUP DAY. BY PHAjETON. The Canterbury Jockey Club opens its spring meeting at Riccarton to-day, and, with the New Zealand Cupj figuring on the programme, the Riccarton gathering will absorb a large amount of attention. Sixteen of the seven teen horses that figured in the list at the date of the final payment still hold their positions, with last year's winner, Scion, at the head of the list. The Boniform gelding having followed up his win at Riccarton last spring by adding the Auckland Cap to his winning repertoire, he must be accounted to hold the full staying certificate. The form displayed by Suion of late has not, however, been of such a character as to encourage the hope that he can win this Cup under 9.0. Roseday (8.9) is the particular one , that has .been singled out for most attention of late, and, judging from what comes to hand from, the South with regard to the* son of Solferino, he is well entitled to be kept on the right side of the ledger. Palestrina (8.5) bus undoubtedly a good dash of brilliancy, but she has yet to reveal that m long trip is within her capacity. Muraahi (7.10) is a clever little horse, and his third in last year's New Zealand Cup is well entitled to consideration when this year's Cup is under discussion. A four-year-old candidate for whose chance quite a number of keen judges have a good word is Pilliewinkie (7.8). The son of Winkie won the Pearce Handicap at Trentham like a real good one. and since recording that performance his Cup prospects havo been considerably brightened. A mile race is, of course, very different from one extending to two miles, but Pilliewinkie is said to carry the appearance of a stayer. The Cup field will be drawn from the following:— „ . •*• lb - Scion, syrs. by Boniform—Lady Jean 11. 9 0 Roseday, 6yra, by —Rosalia. .89 Royal Star, aged, by Martian Lady Victoria . . . . 8 6 Deucalion. 6yrs, by Demosthenes— Mocking Bird . . .... ..86 Rouen, 6yrs. by Bezonian—Lady Laddo 8 5 Palestrina, syrs, by Clarenoeux—Judith 8 6 Vagabond, aged, by Martian—Gipsy Girl 8 1 Scotch Mixture, 6yrs, by Heather, Mixture— .... .. 7 11 Muraahi.
