CRICKET AND LAWN TENNIS. : SEASON OPENS : TO-DAY. ENCOURAGING PROSPECTS. The summer sports season in. Auckland opens to-day. The prospects, J with a continuance of the present fine weather, are exceedingly' bright, and players will respond to the. call of the out-of-doors with keen expectancy. The various field and sports'grounds form a pleasant picture; during the past few weeks they have undergone' a process of preparation and improvement, and are in almost perfect condition, , [ ' The cricket season, which opens to-day with the first round ,of the club- championships, promises well, as all the players of last season and a number of newcomers will take the field. The practice and match wickets, which have been somewhat delayed in preparation by unfavourable weather, are now well advanced, and cricketers', have special opportuni-oft-times denied them playing on good wickets. Eden Park and Victoria Park are' in exceptionally fine order, the efforts of-the respective groundsmen being evidenced in the almost perfect pitches and closely-cut outfields. The season of lawn tennis, under the auspices of the Auckland Lawn . Tennis Association, also opens to-day, with the first rounds of club championships. Th» courts for the most part are in excellent order, and good tennis should be played. The yachting season will be opened ou Saturday, November 17.
