Renter. BERLIN. Oct. 16. A: sudden rise in tho price of tho loaf to 480,000,000 from 34,000,000 marks has infuriated Berliners.
The situation in tho centro of the capital at noon was menacing. Excited crowds numbering thousands and including women, packed the streets surrounding the Town Hall. Two bakeries were plundered and motor-cars were hold up, the mob threatening to throw tho occupants into tho Spree. The crowd refused to dispcrso and tho police used bayonet* and swords and fired revolvers, two demonstrators being wounded.
Finally a deputation waited an the Burgomaster and demanded immediate relief of 10,000 million marks, two loaves apiece, also coal and meals. Tho crowd dispersed upon . the Burgomaster promising favourable consideration.
A hundred Communist leaders have been arrested at Hildeshoim and Alfcld, in Hanover, for attempting to organiseworkmen's councils.
The police in Leipzig used batons on crowds after a number of shops, had been looted. ...
