ILLEGAL TROUT CATCH.
NETTING IN A LAKE.'\ DISCOVERY BY A RANGER. [bi JTELEGIUPH. —OWN qorbe'sponkent} - WELLINGTON. Saturday. • It was stated' to-day by the secretary of the Wellington Acclimatisation ' Society, Mr. C. I Dasent, that ho had heard little or nothing about catches since the fishing season opened/ for the reason that the trout streams in the district had been practically in flood since October, and were still cloudy with storm water, especially in the icountry. The rangers had , been busy liberating fry and yearlings and had reported that they had never seen so many fish in; the mountain streams as they had this season. This is an augury for good fishing as soon as the water clears. While sportsmen aire content to wait for clear running water there are some people who prefer to take• their fish, in other ways. A few days agpv it is reported, a party of men in a motor-car went to the ferry end of Wairarapa Lake for tho ostensible purpose .of netting flounder* All who have indulged in this I'ecreation in the lake know that it isscarcely possible to avoid netting trout at the same time, in which case the law demands that the trout shall be put back in the water. On the way back < to' Martinborough Hie party was held up • by, a police constable, who ,is also a .ranger. He produced his warrant ; and overhauled the car. Thero he discovered but he also found stowed away Borne 601b. of trout and an 81b, .quinnafl salmon. Court proceedings are pendng.
