BRITISH DELEGATION'S WORK

ARRIVAL OF LAND EXPERT.

The members of the British 'Overseas ; Settlement Delegation, who have been visiting the Waikato district, arrived in Auckland yesterday preparatory ■ to taking their departure for England/ They comprised the chairman of the delegation, Sir William Windham, Miss Gladys Pott, Major-General A. G. Wauchope, and Mr. ,J. Wignall, M.P. The delegation was accompanied by Mr. J. Hislop, UnderSecretary for the Department of Internal Affairs, and Mr. H. D. Thomson, UnderSecretary for. Immigration. - The agricultural expert of the party, Mr. F. B. Smith, Professor 1 of Agriculture at the Cambridge : University, arrived by the Ulimaroa yesterday from Sydney, and commences a tour of the Dominion this morning. His*. object is to inquiro into conditions governing Crown and. other lands at present available ' and lands likely :to be avalable, for settlement by immigrants. He leaves by motor-car -this morning for the Waikato, and after spending the night at Hamilton will proceed to-morrow to Rotorua, via the back lands. His route will then lie through Opotiki and, Gisborne. He will arrive at Wairoa on Mondav. and on the following day ho will go to Napier, spending Wednesday night at Woodville, and arriving at Wellington about Thursday. On Saturday, October 13, he will cross to Nelson, his Southern itinerary then embracing the principal South Island centres. From Invercargill. lie will return to Wellington, sailing on October 30 for San Francisco. ; ~ This afternoon the delegation will be welcomed by the Auckland Chamber of Commerce. "' . Major-General Wauchope, who has to complete a month's investigation in New South Wales, will leave by the Uhmaroa to-morrow morning; m company with Mr. Wignall. Sir William Windham and Miss Pott will remain in Auckland until Tuesday, when they will leave by the Makura for Vancouver and England. An "At- Home" in honour of Miss Pott will be given by the Victoria League this evening in the Lyceum Club, Short Buldings. '' ■" . : i \ .
