Following' upon the conferences held with the Automobile ■Associations, tho measure is now ■' being redrafted. Tho Minister slated to-day that copies;of the Bill would be sent confidentially to certain, local authorities and automobile associations '■; for their perusal and suggestions. '•/,: , • .1 ' .'.'.■'. . ■ The motor, bodies have .come to an agreement in regard to the necessity for license fees as well as the tyre tax as a means of revenue, for the j M>in Highways Act. ■ "' ; _ •» The Government is considering, with the parties interested the following proposals Licenses: Motor-cars, £2 per car including one-ton trucks with pneumatic tyres j't lorries ' with pneumatic tyres, £3 ; lorries with solid tyres, £5. v ; It is proposed to limit the weight to 6001b. for each inch width of tyre and the maximum load' to 25,0001b. or, about 10 : tons. ■■: ' '>■'"■;" '■''" , ; ■''■'■■':•. It is understood that the allocation of moneys between the different islands will be fixed according to the number of motor vehicles in each.'■■ ,It is assumed that the number of vehicles in. the North Island is 27,000, and in the South 18,000. By-laws are now being prepared by the Main Highways Board for the guidance of District Highway ' Councils.
