AMERICA AND EUROPE.
MATTER OF REPARATIONS.
APART FROM ALLIED DEBTS.
THE .PRESIDENT'S VIEWS.
. By Telegraph Press Association Copyright. (Received K. 5 p.m.) * , A. and N.Z. NEW YOKE. Sept. 29. Tho Washington correspondent of the New York Evening Post, states that the resolutions of tho American Bankers' Association regarding reparations, fell on deaf cars. Official circles state that Mr. Coolidgo's administration, like Mr. Harding's, looks favourably on the proposal to widen the powers of tho American Debt Commission, and to appoint a representative on tho Reparations Commission, but Mr. Coolidge could hot, if he I wished, make Allied indebtedness part of the reparations question. Congress previously indicated its opposition to such proposals, and cannot be expected in tho coming session to show any change of attitude. Mr. Coolidge and advisors, j moreover, agree with congressmen on this point they wish to keep reparations and debts two separate questions. Official circles, however, derive some satisfaction from the resolution, indicating that the American financiers realise that the economic destiny of tho United States, is closely allied with the tranquility of Europe. The administration, furthermore, feels that interest in European peace by the United States may postpone payments of some of tho Allied debts for a number of years. At the convention of tho American Bankers' Association at Atlantic City, » resolution was adopted asking the President, Mr. Calvin Coolidge, to appoint an official representative to th© Reparations Commission, and that tho American Debt Funding Commission enter into negotia tions with England and France in con nection with such part of the reparations question as may be included in the joint indebtedness, .of the Allies. Tho resolution adds that a policy of complete isolation from European affairs cannot be , maintained indefinitely without grave danger to American interests.
