COLD STORAGE AND DOCK FEES. REDUCTION AT SOUTHAMPTON. [EX TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON, Saturday. The Meat Producers' Board' has received advice from its London office that owing to the reduction in labour costs, the International Cold Storage and lea Company, of Southampton.- has been able to reduce, its cold store charges by 5 per cent., as from August 1. A reduction of 5 per cent, has also been made in labour and extra charges, making a 10 per cent, reduction. In addition, the Southern Railway Company has reduced its charges at the - Southampton docks for receiving, loading, wharfage, and haulage by 10 per cent. It is of interest to note thai in the case of both cold storage and dock charges this is the second reduction made by the authorities during the current year. ■ MELBOURNE PRODUCE MARKETS. A. and N.Z. The first pedigree stock sale, under the auspices -of the Thames .Valley Jersey Breeders' Association was held in 1 aeroa to-day. when the- Farmers' Auctioneering Company offered for sale 66 pedigree cattle. The bidding was not very spirited, except in one or two cases. Under the hammer 24 lots were sold. The .top price of the sale. 51 guineas, was paid for Mr. B. &. Vealo's Jersev bull. " Tixahia Betu." Mr. H Paul, of Netherton. being .the buyer Other prices ranged from 38 guineas to 12* guineas. After the sale a number of private sales were made, when a further eight or ton beasts changed hands, , ... In a great many lines of business, the building trade and its adjunct* being a marked exception, there, is reported to Do considerable dullness. Many retailers complain of the reluctance of the public to spend money. Bare requirements only sure in many cases being purchased. lo j a considerable extent there, is probably ■ depleted purchasing power consequent on past expense connected with the floods and with the epidemic of illness during, a severe winter.' Some wholesalers are inclined to hint to retailers that they themselves are partly responsible for the reduced turnovers becauso their prices to the public have 'not reflected the reductions in wholesale prices. ■ • FRUITGROWING IN OTAGO. . ' The sixth annual meeting of the Cooperative Fruitgrowers of Otaeo. was held last week. Mr. Bennetts, chairman,, in moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, said that four years ago tho company was on the wrong side of the lodger to tlie extent of £0484, but that this debit had been wiped out, and they were now in tho happy position of having a credit of £60. 'He referred to the great increase in the business of the company, and stressed tho necessity for honest packing and grading. He also spoke .of the increase in supplies .of fruit, and advocated a monster petition to the Government urg- . ■'«• protection from the, dumping of outside fruits. He said that the new building now being erected in Dunedin for the company would be one of the, most up-to-date fruit stores in the Dominion. Mt. .Bennets expressed his intention of retiring from the position of chairman'of .directors, and said that he had remained in tho position for so long only : becauso ho was desirous - of putting the business .on a sound footing. BRITISH SEA FISHERIES. " The value of sea fish of British taking returned as landed in England and Wales during the first six months of 1923 ia returned at. £6.861,667, in comparison . with £6.922,593 in the- first half of: the: preceding year. The Ministry of Agriculture's return reveals the fact that haddock and cod are by far the most important products of English fisheries landings of the • former, since the beginning of this year, amounting to 98i.022cwt.. vahied at £1.439.393. and of the latter to .£1.272.740. valued at £1.011.601.' These two kinds alone account for 40, per. cent, of the total takings. During the same period fish weighing 2,185.421cwt.. with a value of £1.586,782. was landed at Scottish ports. Tho totals for the whole of Great Brits were . 6i7BS.B4Scwt.v valued at £8,259,183 for the first half of this year, as compared with 7,354.899cwt., valued at £8,588,138 in the first half of 1922. Imports of fresh fieh amounted* to 1.866,131cwt., valued at £1.991,748. Grimnby heads the list of individual ports, with landings of 267,5690wt. of "wet fish," in ;the six months while Hull and Fleetwood were respectively second and third, with totals of 176;427cwt. and 87.686cwt.
