THE NEW JUDGE.
The appointment of Mr. W. #C. MacGregor to the Supreme Court bench is sure to be greeted, with approval. As was generally remarked when the enabling measure was passed by Parliament, this increase was very necessary, indeed overdue, in view of the ever-growing work of the Courts. In the light of present circumstances and future probabilities, there had to be another Judge. The selection answers finally and completely the rumours that political services would be the inspiration of the appointment. Nothing of this kind can possibly be ' said, since the new Judge goes from one high office in the service of the State to another. This is eminently satisfactory for it is very desirable tha| the Supreme Court bench should not be subjected to such suggestions and possibilities. In addition, the very high qualifications for his duties brought to them by Mr. Justice MacGregor, place the suitability of the choice beyond question. He has had a long and distinguished career at the bar, ensuring that not only his knowledge of the law, but his knowledge of human nature equip him fully for the task he faces. The quality of his work as Solicitor-General sets the seal upon his reputation as a legal practitioner, and as one in whom may be vested with full.. confidence the duties and responsibilities of a Judge of the Supreme Court. The fact of the appointment is a matter for satisfaction, and so also is the selection to fill the newlycreated post.
