When a • midldle-aged man nanidd Thomas William Gainant came up for sentence before Mr. Justice Stringer at the Hamilton Supreme Court to-day. on 13 charges of failing to account for sums of, money, totalling £27 3s, the property of his employer, 'Charles Griffiths, of Rotorua, Mr. McMullin, in asking that Erispner be admitted ,to probation, said it ad been his misfortune to have been working at the time of the. thefts under one Granville Hunt, who was in partnership with Griffiths. His Honor : But how is that going to excuse • him unless you suggest that because he knew Granville Hunt was stealing he thought he would do a little stealing for - himself? : - Mr. McMullin: That is exactly the case, Your Honour. • ' .. His Honor: Well Ido not. see the logic of it. . , • ~ , , , Mr. McMullin sa! J prisoner had given the police every assistance in investigating tha charges, and had previously, borne a. good character. ' - 4 ' • _ His Honor placed prisoner on probation for two years on condition that he made restitution of the stolen money, that ' lie pay £6 toward the cost of the prosecution, and that he . prohibit himself and refrain from gambling.
