Twenty-nine members of ; the stokehold crew of the Union Company's steamer Marama, who were sentenced •, on August 25' to one month's imprisonment for combining to disobey orders on, the high seas, were released from Mount Eden Gaol yes- : terday, the remission of sentence having been ordered , by: the Governor-General. In all 31 firemen of the vessel were charged, but one of these, Burnett W. Turner,, was released on. Tuesday, upon his case being re-heard. Henry Flynn, who acted as spokesman for the accused at the time of the trouble, has not been released. ' The trouble- arose when the ship was beginning her'passage" from Auckland, on August 24. for Sydney, an objection being made to the presence anions the crew of a -non-unionist. Captain Clift, master of the vessel, said at,the trial that : Flynn came on to the bridge and told him the men were going " to stick the ship up. The vessel proceeded down the.: harbour, but when she was about three miles or ! more out the men refused duty. The ship i was brought back to port, and on the folI lowing dav the 31 men were brought before Mr. "J. W. Poynton, S.M.. at the Police' Court and were sentenced to one month's imprisonment. . Mr, Holmden, who appeared for the accused; then communicated "with the Minister for Justice, asking for a remission of sentence. Correspondence ensued, and yesterday, after, serving 12 days in gaol, the men, with "the exception of Flynn, were granted their liberty. ';■-
