MARTON SPUING MEETING. . ARCH SALUTE WINS. , TWO STEEPLECHASERS | KILLED. TBT TELEGBAPH. —OWN ; cofflarspoNi>ENx.3 . v MARTON. ' Wednesday. The weather, was .beautifully fine .for the Marton Jockey Club's meeting to- , day, i and the attendance, which included j a largo number of Aucklanders, was good." J The racing opened with the Trial Plate, j for .which- there was; a field of 20. At-! tractive was made favourite, with Mountain Crag, 'Bonny Marion, ,; and Archeen next in-request. ;; Attractive, Archeen, and Equalise began quickest, but Foolish was in charge at the ' end 'of a; : furlong. At the turn, Foolish and Equalise were racing in front, just ahead of Attractive and Bonny Marion. In the run home, Attractive and Bonny Marion came through, and the favourite, drawing away, won in good style by a length ; and a-half from Bonny Marion. Soliform, Piffle, and Mountain Crag followed the placed horses, the.: Auck-land-owned Drawbridge being well back. There was a field of 14 in the, Hack Hurdles, and Carawock was a strong favourite over £600 better backed than the second choice. Hindi; Dempsey and Gold Star > being next in demand. Eonmark led over the first • fence/, and attended to the pace-making for the first half of the journey, when lie was ;.joined by Prince Rufus. Hindi, and ; Dempsey being their nearest attendants going along the back, the others being strung out. Prince Rufus led into the straight from Eonmark arrd Dempsey, but at the last fence the latter drew level, and a great finish resulted in Dempsey securing the verdict by a neck. Eonmark was two lengths away third. Captain Sarto was fourth, with Tarqain and Carawock .next. «,' v Favourite Finishes Third. ; ;/ The Spring Hack Handicap attracted a field of seven and Doleful Ditty was the popular pick, with Many Colours, Martulla. and Equitable best backed of the ethers. Doleful Ditty and Many Colours moved first, the latter and Stream going out to make the pace along , the back. _ followed by Merry Queen and Doleful Ditty, with the others in a bunch. Many Colours and Stream led into the straight from Doleful Ditty, with Merry Queen, who was tiring, and Equitable next. The lastnamed got through on the fence, and vigorously ridden by R. S. Bagby, got up to j Meat Many Colours by a length. Doleful Ditty, who was always well placed, was a similar distance away, third. Valencia, Stream, and Martulla were the next to finish. ■"•■ • - A good field of : 14 went out for the Marton Handicap and a good favourite was made of V Amour, who was carrying nearly three times as much money as the second Vhoioe, Zircon, while Listowel and Admiral Codrington were next most fancied. Listowel took charge going along the hack and Kilgour moved up while Admiral Codrington, Arch Salute, and Red 'Bob were, handy, while Demos dropped back; L'Amour being in about seventh position at this;stage. Listowel and Kilgour were first ; into the straight, where Arch Salute and Admiral Codrinscon came through, and a good race saw Arch Salute secure the decision bv a length fmm Admiral Codrington. Kahikatca fmiplfe'd well in . third place, just ahead of L'Amour who did not get the best of a passage. The next to finish were Tenterfield, Listowel, and Kilgour. Both the first _ and second horses paid double figure dividends. Admiral Codrington looked a trifle above himself, and should bo improved by the race. ■■ ■'■ ■■-." ■" : " '"■''' '.< '■ Casualties in Steeples. : Berkwick, To Toa, and Lark Hall were evenly backed in that order for the Hack Steeplechase, which was a chapter of accidents. Lark Hall attended to the pacemaking of the first circuit, but he was joined by Berkwick going along the back, and the race looked like being a duel between them, but' about three furlongs from home Birkwick broke a fetlock, leaving Lark Hall to go on and win in hollow fashion from Te Ouai, who paid a double figure dividend. Ringi was an indfferent third, and To Toa fourth, these being the only ones to finish. Whizz Bang seemed assured of second place, but fell at the last fence. Birkwick was destroyed, likewise Glenform, who broke her back, « A field of 14 lined up for the Electric Hack Handicap, for which Civility was entrusted with most support, Dodo, Black Cruiser, and Misgovern being best backed of the others. After Some Red, Bugle Note, and Dodo had turns in the lead, Cochineal assumed command, and led into the straight frOm Dodo, Bugle Note, and Some Red. In the run home, Cochineal withstood all challenges, and scored decisively by two lengths from Dodo. Some Red was* a fair third, and then came Civility, Millimetre, and Bugle Note. The winner returned a strong dividend. Thespian a Disappointment. . In a field of 16, Thespian--was best hacked for the Railway Handicap, while King Quin, Bright Day, and Aeroform claimed -most attention of the others. Thespian and Tatau Tatau moved first, but 1 with a furlong covered, King Quin was in charge, and led round the bend, closely attended by Hipo, this pair being a couple of length's clear of Tatau Tatau, with Thespian mext. Hipo ' had King Quin beaten when they straightened, but ho failed •: to c withstand a strong challenge from Tatau Tatau, .who got up to win by a length. Lady Kotiripo, a neck away, : third, with Island, Amber Tips, and - King Quin next. Thespian finished in eighth position. ' A big field of 20 contested the' Tutaenui Hack Handicap, the final event.of. the day. The Auckland mare, ' Prehble 11, wound up about, £50 better favoured than Many Colours. Mangawhero soon worked hi way to the front, Y and led to the straight from ; Flvaette, ■ Submerge : '-; and j Country; Life. At tho, distance. Elvaette challenged, and 'went on to win by half ■ a length rom'... Good Mark. * who was a neck in front of Pfebble 11. ; The last named was one"-'of the last to leave thV mark, and was well back at the half , mile post, but she erot a run through on the' rails for a furlong, and . quickly improved her position. • She finished well, and had she been better drawn at the barrier, ; would probably have won.
