ALLEGED ILLEGAL SWEEP.
ASSISTING IN MANAGEMENT. BOXER AND TRAINER CHARGED. A charge of having, about Juno 30, assisted in managing a lottery, known as the "Golden' Casket Sweep." on the New Zealand Grand National Steeplechase, run at Christchurch on August 14, was preferred against Stewart Smith, aged 26, and Charles Monien, aged 30, in the Police Court yesterday, before Mr. J. W. Poynton, S.M. Smith is a well-known profes sional light-weight boxer, and the other man is a trainer. Accused,; who were arrested on Tuesday, were remanded till September 13. : S:,. Mr. , Blakey, who appeared for both men, asked for bail. Senior-Detective Cummings asked that bail be substantial, and said that as far ».s could be ascertained, thero was a con spiracy between the two to " take down " the general public for some hundreds of pounds. Tickets had been distributed throughout New Zealand, and it was understood that one of accused had booked & passage to leave for Australia to-day— taking the money with him, of course.
