TRAM FARE NOT PAID.
DISPUTE REGARDING AMOUNT PROSECUTION AS SEQUEL. A-charge of attempting to evade payment of his tram"' fare was denied by a young man, George Hatch, in' the Police Courli yesterday before Mr. J. W. Poynton, i S.M. Evidence was given that defendant boarded a city-bound tram from Herne Bay at England Street, which is only a short distance from Beaumont Street, the end of the section, and he got off the car at Nelson Street. He offered the conductor 2d when he got on the car, and though told that tho fare was 3d, as he was travelling on two sections. He did not pay the proper fare, and the 2d was not accepted. Defendant was only a recent arrival from England, and _■ after hearing his explanation the magistrate convicted him and ordered him to pay costs, £3 2s.
