During the recent long % stoppage of work -■■ on ■>. tlio Maitland; coalfield, "New South Wales, industries i were :■ fcrced to , make contracts for coal from outside sources. Now that the mines have resumed, the usual markets having been temporarily , captured, Maitland coal ii» being poured into New Zealand.: Since August 18. 50.000 tons have been shipped from Newcastle to New Zealand ports, and importations are coming in at. the rate of 1.0,000 tons weekly. Local mintt owners, "in face of this competition, aro experiencing difficulty in holding their trade together, and any interruption would only have the effect of causing consumers to do as they j did two years ago—lake in stocks of Newcastle with consequent ill-effects on thu mining industry. ;"•..;>•
