' Some idea of the ■ difficulties confronting the United States in coping with the immigration restriction law is afforded by the announcement that 28,000 immigrants were admitted to Ellis Island alone during the first three weeks of July. One hundred inspectors worked day and night subjecting newcomers to minute' examination. A total of 1200 . immigrants, a considerable number of whom are British, have been detained pending a decision from Washington regarding their cases. The larger number of these will be deported because of the great influx of newcomers and the limited accommodation at : Ellis Island. •' '■ ? ;l Many of the immigrants, suffered great discomfort, especially during the recent prolonged heat spell, despite the efforts of the immigration authorities to minimise their suffering.
