BREEDERS' ANNUAL MEETING
ELECTION OF OFFICERS.
". The twenty-first annual meeting of the . New - Zealand;;,: Jersey ; Cattle Breeders' : ; Association was held ■ yesterday at the j Chamber of Commerce. The president, Mr. E. D. McLonnan, occupied the chair. There- was a good attendance, breeders from all parts of the Dominion being : present. The director of the Dairy Division of the Department of 'Agriculture, Mr. W. M. Singleton, was in attendance. . ; v .' The annual, report stated that the past year had been the- most successful in. tho history of the association. The membership bad increased by 151. making a total of 1138.: Cattle registered totalled, 6288 compared : with 4311 for the. previous- year, an increase ,jail9T7. 1 The campaign against "the use, of scrub bulls had been rigorously ..waged during the year. The number of 'animals undergoing • the, certificate of record test showed a satisfactory ; increase, ' v anc(- 'the association haid paid out in subsidies during the year £A7O Bs, , : distributed ainoiig " 144 ■■ breeders. The certificates issued during the year totalled ; 544 against' 375 in 1922, an -increase of 169. '•■'. The certificates issued now totalled /1823^with! an average' of 42Qi211b. of '; butter-fat. "; The winner of the gold. medal -awarded by.vthe association for tiie four-year-old class ; was St. Lambert's Bell, - owned Uy Mr. ".-A. J. Smith. ■; In addition : to the gold medal the owner received a special prize of £10: 10s arid a subsidy of £4 ; 4s. The. tattoo ; method ' of branding, added the report, would bo; adopted in the near future. .'..,. , ;■" The statement of accounts showed receipts totalling £3767 of which £1725.; was from registration fees, £817 memfiers, subscriptions/ etc., and £661 transfer '■'. fees. There. a credit balance of £960.' In moving|: the adoption; of the report, the chairman said everything pointed to consistent .progress lin Jersey breeding. "Land -was at such hiigh values that only by intense cultivation could farmers succeed. • They, must breed the best cattle' to get the best returns in dairying, and the Jersey had proved the best cow for dairying. The accumulated capital of the association, .he added,, was about £5000. He suggested that > the acquisition of permanent offices for .the association should be seriously considered. * '*/■. A' suggestion relating to the inspection ' O? calves was discussed at some length ■ I'M no definite action was decided upon' ; The following members of council were ' elected: Mr. E. D.
