Melville (Auckland} said that the Auckland Suburban Local Bodies' Association had asked the conference to consider a'suggestion that hawkers' licenses be issued by a central body of a combined district, such as Auckland, for a radius of 15 miles, the license fees to bo distributed among, the local bodies concerned within the. combined district on a pro rata basis. She suggested the conference, might carry a remit to that effect. /The only object of the proposal w"as to secure a better control of , a somewhat undesirable section of the community. ■• , • * .'
The chairman, Mr, J. A. Flesher, said the usual procedure was not to grant a hawker's license without a police report. He thought if they mad© the radius 15 miles they could charge a higher license fee. He . suggested the minimum license fee be £5. .
A remit was adopted along the lines suggested, with the addition of a minimum licensing fee of £5. • ' ' On behalf of the Devonport Borough Council, Miss Melville moved that gas mains and machinery be made rateable. Tho remit was carried.
Mr. D. A. McLean, Mayor of Whangarei, moved that the Municipal Corporations Act, 1920, be' so amended to provide that a council i make and levy an annual parks rate not exceeding a rate equal to £d in the £ on the capital value of all ratable property in the borough for: improvement and maintenance . of parks and reserves. This was carried. s'On behalf of the Pukekohe Borough Council, Mr. R. D. Hamilton moved a remit empowering local bodies to fix rates 'on a sliding scale. The remit was carried. ' ,
