FORMATION IN AUCKLAND.

ENTHUSIASTIC MEETING.

a An energetic effort is to be made to organise musical, elocutionary, and literary competitions in Auckland. A meeting, convened by the Mayor, Mr. J. H. Gunson, was held yesterday afternoon, and the, formation of a Competitions Society was decided upon. V /

The Mayor expressed his pleasure at the large and representative .attendance, and said he thoroughly endorsed the value of the competitions from an educational point of view. He was very glad to be associated in the formation of the society, because of its value to the whole community.

* Mr. R. G. Sellar referred to the large number of societies , formed in other centres : which were successfully carrying out their operations. The Dunedin society, for instance, was formed in 1902, and last year had 1600 entries. The Christchurch society, formed in 1910, also had large entries, while the Wellington society, formed in 1918, last year had 2340 entries. Revenue was obtained from subscriptions, entrance fees, and from the proceeds of entertainments, Tentative arrangements would have to be made for the preliminary finance. He moved: "That in the opinion of this meeting it is desirable to form ! a Literary, Elocutionary,: and* Musical Competitions Society in Auckland, and this meeting hereby resolves upon the formation of such a society." ', . The Rev. J. W. Shaw seconded the motion, and enthusiastically, endorsed the formation of the society. He spoke from his practical experience of the success of the Invercargill society, v ; Mr. G. W. Mcintosh, relieving manager of the National Bank in Auckland, gave the meeting valuable information, having been a member of the committee of the Dunedin Competitions Society, for . many years; " /.■ ] The motion was carried unamimously. It was decided that" all the persons present, and those from whom _ apologies were received, should constitute a general committee. An executive > committee, to arrange • preliminary ~' details and report to the general committee was formed as follows: —The Mayor, the Hon. George Fowlds, the Rev. J. W. Shaw, Messrs. P. J- Sellar; G. W. Mcintosh, C. Hudson, A. J. Hutchinson, and D. Pollok (convener).
