A, deputation i representing the column monument committee waited upon tho City Council to-night with -a request that the former site of the Godley statue in Cathedral Square should be granted as a sito for tho proposed memorial column. By nine votes to eight the council refused permission. - k ,

Christchurch citizens were unable, to agree on the form of a war memorial. One ".party collected funds for a column to be erected in Cathedral Square, but have not been able to socuro a site from the civic authorities. The other party decided to erect a bridge of remembrance over the River Avon, and this work h»s been started. *
