MOUNT EDEN BOROUGH.
ROAD AND OTHER WORKS.
The Mount Eden Borough Council • met last evening, ; the Mayor, Mr. J. L. ; A. 1 ; Kayll, presiding. There were also present: Messrs. W. H. Nagle, W. J. Hammill, D. Meikte, A. M. Bryden, W. G. Lange, J. P. Hooton, S. Newcomb, W.' Woolley, C. H. Cowan, S. J. Marks;. D. C. Fraser, and L. Joll. .v- -
The engineer, Mr. J. Rogers, recommended that, with a view to filling up the hole at the intersection of Bellevue Road and Dominion Road, household refuse be deposited there for the next few months. As 100 casks -of- distilled tar had arrived, the work of tarring several' roads would be put in hand. The improvement of the water supply, was in progress: ;• Work'. on Disraeli and Enfield Streets was proceeding satisfactorily, as was ; ; also the construction of trunk and reticulation sewers. The contractor for the formation of Boundary Road had started operations ; connected with . the rock excavation and was making good progress. The report was adopted. ; It was decided that no further work be done to Boundary Road beyond . the present contract until the " decision of the commission was received. ;.; :..:''.;'-' .'■' r
The engineer also reported that the proposed improvement ■ work to Sylvan Avenue on the same lines :as the work done to Mount Eden Road would cost £1000. A roadway of solid concrete would cost £2700. The present condition of the lower end of Elizabeth Street was beyond description. Proposed improvements should be carried out by day labour. Action on these proposals was deferred. The Mayor moved that, as the engagement of the council' .with the engineer would soon terminate, the executive committee be authorised to draw •'■ up fresh conditions of appointment, and that applications for the position be invited at a salary of £700 per annum. He also moved, that the ouestion of appointment of a foreman of works be considered. Discussion on the motion was deferred-
The New Lynn Town Board wrote stating that it was proposed to call on neighbouring local bodies to contribute toward the cost of improving Great North Road. A schedule was submitted proposing Mount Eden's share of the expense at 2 per cent. It was decided to reply that the council would agree to the percentage, but would require to know what work was proposed.
,',' A letter from the Public Works Department stated that plans, specifications, "and estimates, of cost of works on Boundary Road and Landscape Road, with notice of the proportion which it is considered should be paid bv each bodv, should be forwarded to the Mount' Roskill Road Board. If not accented, application for the commission would be favourabry consir'ered. The letter was referred to the Works Committee, with power to act. ; It was decided to spend £160 of loan monev on renairs to Shaddock Street. The City Council is to be asked to co-operate, as the mad is a boundary one. A visit of inspection to the streets of the boron eh is to be made by members of the council on Thursday, June. 7.
