THREE CASES OF THEFT.

ONE OFFENDER SENTENCED. Three cases of theft were heard yesterday before Mr. J. W. Poynton, S.M., in the- Police Court. A youth of 20, Leslie Fisher, was charged with breaking and entering the shop of Henry Alexander Walker, and having stolen cigarettes, cigars, tobacconist's articles, and 10a in money, to a. total value of £5 10s. Accused pleaded crailty, and admitted having gained an entry into the shop through a window. He was out of work at the time, tie was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. of nine shirts, valued at £3 The theft of nine shirts, valued at ±,0 16s 6d, was the charge against George Henry O'Brien, aged 41. The evidence showed that accused was found in a drunken state near a shop where shirts had been taken. In a statement made at the gaol accused said he had been. drinking all that day. He was joined by an unknown man who had a bundle ot newshirts, and this man and he endeavoured to sell them. He denied Ihe theft, . the other man had disappeared. Accused, who had 26 previous convictions, was sentenced to three months* imprisonment. The thefts of £10 and £1 in money were charges made against Mary Adelaide Kassen, aged 23. In a statement to the police accused admitted taking the money from a house in Newton where she was visiting. She had yielded to sudden temptation. She was at present unemployed and staying with respectable people. Accused had al conviction in i 1917 for theft. She was remanded for a week that a report from the probation officer might be obtained,

HUSBAND AND WIFE QUARREL. Differences between Thomas * Edward Beaumont, aged 23, and his wife, the lessee of a Princes Street boarding house, resulted in the husband appearing on a charge of having assaulted his wife, Phoebe Mary Beaumont. Accused, who was defended by Mr. Tone, pleaded not guilty. In evidence, Mrs Beaumont said her husband -went home on Wednesday in a taxi the worse for drink. He said he would strangle her, and she became so frightened that she ran out into Princes Street. He caught her by' the arm and bruised it. The marriage took place in October, 1922, and witness was much older than her husband. The police had been called in on a previous occasion on account of his behaviour. Accused said there had been matrimonial differences in the morning. He had two drinks and took a taxi home, as lunch was "off" at 2 p.m., and he did not want to miss it. He used no force on his wife, and was merely coaxing her to come inside when the detective arrived. Accused, whom the magistrate described as "a hanger-on," was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence. An order for separation was ..made by consent. Maintenance was not sought, it being remarked that Mrs. Beaumont would probably give him a pound or two to make a start somewhere. THREE CASES REMANDED. A charge of having committed rape at Papakura on a seven-year-old girl was made against James Baldwin. A remand for a week was granted, bail being fixed at £200. A remand for a weei was granted in the case of John Reginald Simmon aged 41, charged with having failed r*o «I:count for the sum of 30s. Bail in the sum of £100 was allowed. It was stated tjvit accused had admitted other similar cnarges, involving the sum of £91. George William Sullivan, aged 50. was remanded for a week on a charge of' having obtained £10 at Te Aroha by false pretences by means of a valueless cheque.
