The outlook regarding the dispute on the Northern coalfield is blacker than erar. The owners have decided to use every means possible to work : the mines. The only ray of hope is ; a split in the miners* ranks, the Moderates opposing the Communist section, which advocates a fight to a finish.
; It 'is i understood that tho question .of introducing voluntary labour., in the idle mines will be discussed, at the r.crt meeting; of the owners. Adoption of the proposal would involve a ' general miners' strike. The trouble ;so far is mostly confined to the Maitland field, ; but, the position is now complicated by tho strike at South Clifton colliery, on the south coast field, where 700 men are idle. • The cause of the trouble is payment for splitting pillar coal. -
