Mr. /Bennett, district telegraph superintendent, stated that this morning there were still no wires to the North Island via th East Coast, but an improvised circuit had been procured from Christchurch via Greymouth, Nelson, and Blenheim direct to Wellington. By this_circurt the telegraph office was now enaolea ..to work the multiplex fast. printing machine, which was doing splendid work, and; was practically coping with; all work/'coming to hand. Things were at, normal, and would remain so as long as the circuit held up. Hammer Springs at the present time was absolutely isolated as • far as telegraphic . communication .was concerned. The floods have subsided sufficiently between Kaiapoi and Rangiorai to allow trains to run. • The. Cheviot line is still in a very bad state. . (
BREAK AT CLARENCE RIVER.
ENERGETIC REPAIR MEASURES.
[BY TELEGRAPH.PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON. : Wednesday. . 'In consequence of. the breakdown of the telegraph wires at the Clarence River," communication between Wellington and Christchurch has had to be maintained via Westport. The Postmaster-General, the Hon. J. G. Coates, that the quadruple duplex telegram-printing . machine, capable of taking 400 messages', an hour, is being installed' between Wellington and Christchurch, via Blenheim, Torihouse, Glenhope. and Greymouth. Tlie chief telegraph engineer, Mr. E. A. Shrimpton, left for Nelson by tho Wainui to visit the scene of the breakdown, : and attend to matters on the spot. The,local engineers have been instructed to.get- the work of repair in hand as soon as possible.
