MOUNT ROSKILL AFFAIRS.

RATEPAYERS' MEETING. PAST YEAR'S PROGRESS. The annual meeting of ratepayers of the Mount Roskill Road district was held last evening. The chairman of the board; Mr. G. E. Tansley, presided over a moderate attendance. ; The annual report of the Road Board presented by the chairman, stated that all the accounts were in credit, with the exception of the water account, which showed a debit of £1684. The year ended with a substantial credit, balance. A saving of £263 had been effected through the board purchasing water from the City Council, instead of pumping it from the local well. The Islington Estate would be provided with 3, good, water supply before next summer. The board had considered a scheme of sewerage . embracing the area from Greenwood's Corner and taking in all that part of the district, and the Three. Kings and across Hillsboro' Road and Carlton Street to the Manukau. Considerable opposition was shown r by ratepayers owning rural land, and finally the scheme was abandoned. The board was then approached by the One Tree Hill Road Board in regard to a suggested joint scheme.. This scheme has been under consideration for some time, and the board was hopeful that an agreement would be reached. As a result of representations to the Power Board electric light poles had been erected in several roads. ....

The report stated that building operations during the year had been very brisk, 119 building permits being granted, of a total value of £85,750, while 64 new water services- had been put in. The board had also purchased and paid for, from revenue, a complete road making plant, at a cost of £1600. The plant had been used and had given great satisfaction, and would save the board a considerable sum in the future. . The road roller had been hired out to contractors when not wanted by the board, and had earned, up to March 31, £254, besides "doing the work of the board. The report was adopted and votes of thanks were accorded to the three retiring members of the board, Messrs. Tansley, H. Luke and J. J. Preston.
