Born in Devonshire/ England, he -. was ;13 years >oi<. age when he ; came fto New Zealand with his parents, arriving in Wellington in 1856. >•- He spent some time in Christchurch, but later settled in Wa-, ' nganui. ?-; Mr. Liffiton took :- his •' share in military Vservice against, the Maoris, s;; sf||§f ing the' old Wanganui cavalry, in which he went through the r campaign : under General/ Cameron '[ and'' General Chute. 'He j; ;•', was r appointed a justice of the peace in : ' ■ 1882, and was the oldest member of honorary magistracy in Wanganui at the time' of his death.
