" ; NOTES AND COMMENTS. * nif%? second , annual ' race for the Lipton Challenge Cup which took place last Saturday, brought out \- six competitors. " The weather conditions, were ideal, . the northerly wind giving i: the boats a. fair trial on all three • points :of sailing; : it was a, lead to the;: Resolution ■•; mark, a a dead •': beat to the beacon in Rangitoto Channel, a flat run tin with.- spinnaker set-to t a : little "nasi 'North | iiead, and a lead for ..the remainder of the l ;, fu?f^V :l rly , m i; race 'it could be seen I that Marie and Venus . were , going to - make a close ;; contest of it. Venus got the best of the start, - but Mane- gradually over-' hauled; her and at. the i Resolution buoy was leading .by the narrow margin of seven «econds: _Mane improved:; her ; position on the wind, beating out sto windward- and going, through the water in fine style. Heading down channel she was leading Venus by about lm^Bos;> the latter being about lm ahead of Valeria. Marie kept rather long in port, and Venus, , which worked more* in the .stronger tide, 'gained ,a ■, little i on her rival. At : the mark ; Marie : was Pleading by J lm 225.: Valeria' being; 3m 1235 ! astern of Venus. -; From -this out Marie: continued her lead, eventually crossing : the finishing line 2m 34s ahead of '. Venus, which beat Forest Gold for 1 second* place by V4m 675. Mario was -well handled by hers owner/ Mr. ,V. I Lidgard, and thoroughly deserved her win. Valeria,, winner ?of the ceup ; last. year, was . disappointing, and although she'occupied third position for the greater J v part of the rax©, she had, to finally give, place to' Forest Gold. "•■■'■■ Lucille' and Mowai were - never '• prominent. The cup will be handed to the Akarana • Club during the winter months, '''»■ and will then be retained . by the : club - for 13 months. :'--:. ■'■.•»v : ■.'v./. -..\.-,''.. •> ; >'.: ,v : -'.>.:'-' ; -

: ' Arrangements ~ for the,' official ; closing; ; ol the yachting, season, which takes place: next . Saturday, will be made at t a : meeting ?' of the Auckland Yacht . and i Motor-bout Association on Tuesday evening. : The 'v destination i for yachts and launches ; will probably be Islington Bay. / The smaller classes i will race over a harbour. course. •:'-:,;; ■-■■" ■:-"'- ■•■ - The .annuals race :;f or the Kohh Cup -for launches,, which was decided ; last Saturday by the 3 Ponsonby Cruising :Club, -was ■ very disappointing. : Only »four , boats entered for the race, and of these only two ' started. •', The holder, Daisy, arrived at the flagship some time after the race had started, * whiles the Kermath failed to put in anv appearance. This left Esther G- t and Kowhai -to themselves,, 'and after leading ,- from ;.start.-** to finish ; the ' former .won; by 275. So little is the interest ' taken . in; launch .- racing -at the present .time it has been • suggested that unless,' larger c entries - come ."'to- hand v from the various;■ yacht \ clubs, :the fixtures -on the programmes" for launches should;,be deleted until '•■ such time as ; launch -y racing: becomes more, popular, among owners. 'i . .:• .■- ; ;-V ■■:■, ■;;:- - A,/humber of yachts and launches have been hauled 'up for the winter, and several others will take the " hard'*?. to-day. The majority 1 of ; the boats, however, .will ■.-; not be hauled out until: after the final combined cruising race. ' . ■'
