TRIAL SHIPPING SERVICE. LINK WITH J SOUTHERN PORTS [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] TAURANGA, Friday. The monthly meeting of the Tauranga Harbour Board was held on Wednesday. The general manager of the Union Steam Ship Company, . Wellington, wrote stating the company was agreeable "to arrange a : trial trip of a small steamer from Southern ports.. We shall shortly look into the cost of the call in question with a view to assessing the rate of freight and the minimum quantity required, and will announce a fixture in ample time to enable consignees to arrange their • orders." The board appointed a committee of four of its members to canvass the Bay of Plenty districts for cargo for the vessel. " . The board's consulting engineers wrote with reference to erection of a wharf at the Mount for handling stone from Moturiki Island, stating it was necessary to obtain the permission of the Marine Department for the erection of the wharf, and a plan had been prepared showing the wharf and the locality of the tram■way, which had been forwarded to the department for approval. In recrard to the removal of Victoria Wharf, they recommended that the wharf be dismantled by contract, and that tenders be called for the work. It was decided to call tenders.
A petition from 14 ratepayers at Mount Maunpanui was received suggesting the advisability of providing shipping facilities at the proposed wharf at Mount Maunganui, which is to utilised by the board for handling stone., The petitioners also suggested the desirability of removing the cattleyard at Mount Maunganui from its present \ position. The ).. board decided that the request • concerning the wharf be referred to the board's engineers for an estimate of the cost, and that the removal of the cattleyards be deferred.
The Finance Committee reported having made an offer of a grant not exceeding £100 toward the cost of a shed at Omanawa, subject to certain conditions. The offer of the Forestry Department to supply 21.000 two-year trees had been accepted, the department to arrange the planting of the trees. A grant of £10 10s was made to the Sir Arthur Pearson Memorial Fund.
It was decided that the policy of . harbour development as • relating to wharf constiuction .within the harbour, as defined in the engineers' report of February 20, be adopted.
