OBITUARY.
MR. J. J. CAMPBELL. i In the death of Mr. J. J. Campbell, of Massevs Road, Otahuhu, this week, there m passed away one of New ft Zealand's > X . pioneers. The son of a shipbuilder of If Rothesay, Scotland, Mr. Campbell left his native: country in August, ! ~ 1862, arriving I in New Zealand in November, 1862. Mr. Campbell engaged in contracting for the Government at Onehunga, Nelson, Foxton and Addington, and later in Dunedin, ■- where he-built several bridges that are' stilL in use. . :3 After;this- he took up land . m Taranaki and \ settled on the Waimate*?s Plains, where} for many years he was one . of j Taranaki's best-known farmers. ' He was a prime mover in the formation of the " Kaupokonui Dairy Company, and was chairman of directors i for seven, years. He' - was also: one of: the originators of the. Eltham Box Company, being a director for 'I. many years, ; and j, of the -Pafea Freezing Company.; - About •>; 1910 > Mr. :' Campbell '.: took up land in Walton;; and in 1916 moved to Otahuhu. Mr. Campbell was well known #as a breeder of stock and cattle, and his .house is adorned with many trophies won by i; him, one -of the meat',, valned being, a magnificent cup presented •-,., by the president of the Egmont Agricul- •-. tural and Pastoral Association in : 1903 for '■, the highest points in sheep, cattle and horses. *A similar cup was won by Mr. c Campbell Walton in 1912. 'A . resident of Auckland of nearly 70 - years' standing, Mrs,. Helen Stuart Moore, ,- died recently at her residence/ View Road, Mount Eden. Mrs. Moore, who was 75 || years of .:. age, arrived '- .-in > New/:. Zealand •.-, V when a young ; child with her. parents, [and>.'.y had resided in Auckland practically ever _ h since. Mrs. Moore \ was a member of the >ji|| Auckland^ Art Society from its 1 inception," :;j arid when i unable:to 'exhibit was made a $ life member of the society. She was well known for 3, the ■: excellence.. of s her work, especially 'in portraiture. She won a medal 'zfjjm for a painting exhibited at the Paris : : -||j Exhibition during the reign of Queen Victoria. ? F.W. KELSEY. An old and respected colonist, Mr. F. W. Kelsey, died :•■ on Wednesday at his poi residence, Ho wick/ at the age' of 68. Mr. ( |*| Kelsey. . who was the eldest son of the •;'} late Captain J. W. - and Mrs. Kelsey, of V Hull, arrived. in New Zealand at the age of seven, with his grandparents, Mr. andj«jfe| •Mrs. J. Bishop, in the ship William Miles in 1861. ; He lived as a youth with his grandparents at Pakuranga.. At the age ||| of *16 ' ■■ he'■'•■: was apprenticed to Messrs. ; Winks and ; Hall, cabinetmakers, and he .o§ followed • that occupation until 1883, when l-(M he * visited ° ; . England. ; ■He returned a i year Sp later, bringing his widowed mother and brothers and sisters, and, in 1885 he com- -">] menced storekeeping at Howick, and con- ■■■. tinued the business .until he retired about 18 months ago. ;■ He leaves the : following ;" fi sons and daughters: Messrs. The death : is; announced of Mr. J. DMcGruer, : one of ; the most prominent , figures in drapery circles in the Dominion. --. "]• Ho was born: in the Isle of Skye in 1857 - and served his apprenticeship in Glasgow. ■ As a young man he left for America and . ;s spent a few years in Canada and the united States. He then came to New Zealand and joined the Dunedin staff of '. >' Messrs. : Bint;, • Harris; and Co. Later he was with the firm of i) Messrs. Brown, , Ewihg and Co. ? : but after spending eight years in Dunediri ho went to InvercargiU. , .'- where he ; commenced business on his own •;. account. .-His enterprise was a very :sue* n -5 cessful one, '■: and branches of the business were started at various country towns; ui Southland and South Otago. After spend- ;gg ing 32 years in Iriyercargill Mr. McGruer rdisposed:- of his business there and devoted himself to 1 the development of his I||| numerous ;'■ drapery .'; interests in the North Island. . He . was a liberal supporter of , /,4 ; the Y.M.C.A. and '-: a prominent member ' of. the Presbyteiian Church.
