OLD-TiME PRISON escape. DISCOVERY OF MASTER KEY. A. and N.Z. MELBOURNE. April 2. Officials are convinced that the mystery surrounding the sensational escape of a notorious convict, Frederick Clarke, from the Geelong gaol, in 1889, has been solved. While the prisoners were clearing the prison ground they discovered a large brass key, which proved 'to be a master key for every lock in the gaol at the time of Clarke's ' escape. Clarke was transported to Van Diemen's Land in 1847, and died in Geelong at the-age of 57. He had a record of sentences totalling 87 years for various crimes. , NEW ZEALAND AXEMEN.
