SINGAPORE NAVAL BASE.

EFFECT ON AUSTRALIA.

WORKS MAY BE SUSPENDED.

Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Reed. B.S p.m.) MELBOURNE. March 33. The Federal Defence Council has decided that there shall be no material change in defence matters contemplated pending the Imperial Defence Conference. It is unofficially stated that all expenditure on works at existing or proposed naval bases in Australia will be abandoned, in view of the Admiralty's decision to establish a big naval base at Singapore. It is expected that there •will be now greater activity in connection with air services.
