POLICE COURT NEWS.

UNPROVOKED ASSAULT.

FOURTEEN DAYS' IMPRISONMENT. Fourteen days' imprisonment was the sentence imposed on William Oliver, aged 20, who appeared at the Police Court yesterday, before Mr. J. W. Poynton, S.M., on a charge of having assaulted Joseph Andrew Beattie, caretaker of the Magistrate's Court.. Informant stated that he was waiting for a tram in Queen Street on Thursday evening when accused accosted him. and struck him in the face without provocation. Informant followed the man for ten minutes before he was able to have him apprehended. Accused attributed the occurrence to two drinks of whisky, which he had during the afternoon.

MISCELLANEOUS CHARGES. For allowing a dog to bite a passer-by Louis Adams was fined 40s and costs 235. J. H. Hannan, the informant, obligingly lifted the leg of his trousers to show the Bench the marks left by the animal's teeth. The dog was ordered' to be destroyed. For being found in licensed hotel premises during closing hours. Walter Hitkins was fined £2, costs lis. A young Chinese, Wong Yat Nam, was fined 10s for failing to register as an alien. A warning to pawnbrokers to make correct and full entries in books kept for entering details of pledges was made by Mr. Poynton when John Sissons Garrett, a pawnbroker, was charge with failing to make a proper entry in respect to some jewellery. The information was dismissed after a warning had been given. Fines of 10s were imposed on John Scott, Reginald Lewis Short, and Tony Domanzic for failing to register firearms. Robert Reid (Mr. Simson), an elderly man, was convicted and discharged for being found in possession of a revolver. Arrears of £55 18s on an order for the maintenance of a child in an industrial school led to George Forrest Hale, aged 39, being ordered to keep up regular payments and pay 2s 6d weekly off the arrears, failing which he would be imprisoned for six months.
