NEW SIGN DEMONSTRATED.

FIRST READY IN THREE MONTHS.

The new tramway destination-sign device was demonstrated to the City Council last, evening by the manager of tramways, M.r. A. E. Ford, by means of a model erected in the chamber. . A report from the Electricity and Tramways Committee stated that" Mr. Ford estimated that it would be about three months before the first sign would be ready. After that they could be completed at the rate of 25 cars per month. The new signs, being far more comprehensive than anything seen in use hitherto, and containing considerable mechanism, would have to be made under contract and assembled in the tramway workshops. The committee stated that the cost of the signs for 150 cars was estimated at £6300, plus further cost of screens. Authority was given to the manager to proceed with the replacing of the old signs with the new ones. A proposal, emanating from Mr. M. J. Bennett, that the sign "Karangahape Road," should be carried by all cars passing along that thoroughfare, was reported by the committee to be undesirable. To set this precedent would be to bring claims from other districts of equal merit, but not termini. The suggestion was therefore not adopted. The manager was authorised to have trial signs placed on tram routes to indicate the various section!!.
