STANDARD TEXT BOOKS.
REPLY TO CRITIOISM.
[BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON. Tuesdaj The director of education, replying to criticism of the rector of the Otago Boys' High School, Mr. Morrell, regarding the standardisation of secondary school books, says it is unfortunate that Mr. Morrell has thought fit to criticise after publication of the list, for a projected list was referred to Mr. Morrell for criticism and opinion on the whole scheme 2£ months ago. The books in the list ought to offer a sufficiently wide choice to anyone. The authorised list is quite flexible, and if inspectors approve of any books suggested by headmasters they may bo added to the list forthwith.
HEADMASTER'S APPROVAL.
CONTRIBUTION TO EFFICIErfCY.
[BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] OAMARU. Tuesday Invited to give his views on the department's proposed standardisation of text books in secondary schools, Mr. -Mil* ner, rector of the Waitaki Boys' High School, says that the proposal meets with the approval of his staff and himself. He adds that the proposed list appears to be both liberal in text book provision and comprehensive as embracing the most progressive works, having the largest school backing. The scheme was supported because it means great economy in wholesale purchases, and the elimination of a multiplicity of discredited and obsolescent text books. It will thus contribute directly to educational efficiency, and give guidance to minor schools, inexperienced teachers, and extra-mural students, while it does not discourage initiative or individuality.
