WIN FOR MISS HOEFT.

■BEATS MISS WYLIE BY A TOUCH.

The swimming gala held at Calliope | Dock last evening in connection with the carnival attracted an attendance estimated at about 3000, and the spectators were treated to a fine evening's sport. Practically all the prominent local swimmers competed, while additional interest was created by the appearance of Mis» Mina Wvlie, the Sydney" lady champion, in the 100 yds. Ladies' Invitation Race and the Indies' Handicap, against the New Zealand and Auckland champions. In the invitation race Miss Wylie was beaten by Miss Pauline Hoeft by a touch, after an exciting struggle. Miss V. Walrond, who defeated Miss Wylie at Sydney, was. fourth. In the handicap, Miss Wylie and IVliss Hoeft dead-heated for third place in a heat. It was a fine race. They did not start in the final. Two New Zealand records were broken. In the girls' lOOvda. championship of Auckland, Miss D. Magee covered the distance in 795, lowering the record by two seconds. Miss Piri Page retained the 75yds. Ladies' International Championship by swimming the distance in the record time of 49 2-os. The New Zealand record was 51s. There were many close and exciting finishes, including; three dead heats, which testified to the excellence of the work of the handicapper, Mr. H. Moore.
