SATURDAY MORNING CLASSES
The hoard of managers of the Seddon Memorial Technical College met• yesterday, the chairman, Mr. H. S. W. King, presiding. There were also present: Mrs. N. E. Ferner, Messrs. J. A. C. Allum, S I. Crookes, J. Clark, H. Dearsley, R. G. Speight, W. C. Smith, W. E. Sill, W. Manson, and J. P. McPhail. . The report from the director, Mr. G. J. Park showed the number on the roll en the Technical High School classes to be approximately 750. The director asked for alterations to classrooms to provide accommodation for the largely increased number of pupils. Authority was given to make the alterations. It was decided to agree to the use of the foundry for motor engineering classes, and the executive committee was given power to make the necessary alterations. The forward movements committee reported having conferred with the board's architect upon the suggested building of an assembly hall, which was estimated to cost about £10,000. It was reported that a considerable sum of money was in hand from the bequests of the late Mr. R. J. Einns and Mr. Richard Hindley. The board instructed the forward movement committee to push on [with the arrangements in connection with the proposal. The finance committee reported upon a proposal to sell a section of land in Federal Street, forming part of the estate of the late Mr. Binns. It was resolved to confer with the Director of Education in regard to this proposal. The appointment of three additional instructors was left in the hands of the chairman and the director. Several employers in the plumbing trade asked for the establishment of Saturday morning training classes for their apprentices. It was decided that the director be authorised to arrange for such classes, and to appoint instructors. Messrs. Dearsley, Burt, and Allum recorded their dissent. The director reported in regard to the insurance of pupils taking workshop classes. This matter was referred to the Education Department. It was decided to approach the City Council to obtain tramway concessions for pupils attending Technical College classes.
