PEDESTRIANS IN DANGER.
. -* - ; INTOXICATED DRIVERS. MAGISTRATE'S WARNING. A serious view of the occasional practice of young men in driving motor-cars while under the influence of drink is token by Mr. J. W. Poynton, S.M. On Saturday, William Joseph Clark, aged 29 (Mr. Singer), appeared before the magistrate named and Mr. J. H. Fray,. J.P., to answer a charge of having been drunk while in charge of a motor-car. ( The police stated that accused was driving along Ponsonby Road at 10.45 a.m. on Friday with a friend, who was also drunk". " It is all right for the man in the car or his friend," said Mr. Poynton, " but what of the public? It is a very serious matter. We shall have to consider whether cases of this kind are not properly subject to sentences of imprisonment, rather than fin«s." Accused, who was a licensed taxidriver, pleaded guilty, and was fined £5.
