TROUT-FISHING SEASON.
SPORT IN THE WHAKATANE.
Some excellent trout fishing was recently secured by a party of Auckland anglers in the upper reaches of the Whakatane River, between Ruatoki and Ruatahuna. At the somewhat remote pah of Ohaua, where the party camped for a time, over 70 fish were secured on the J"*? H lree - da ' much t0 fcl '« delight of the Maoris, who greatly appreciated the change of diet, and who dried a large number for future use. That the Whakatane and its tributaries ?v 8 -i ully stocked is very evident In the Waikere-Whenua, up which bush stream it was necessary to ride, the party observed fish in every pool and it was not an unusual thing to secure two or three fish out of each run in the Whakatane Kiver. The fish averaged between 21b to 51b., and nearly every one was in gooo condition, but it was obvious to the members of the party that no river could continue to support such a large number of trout without some effect on their condition.
