WELLINGTON BURGLARY.

POLICE MAKE AN ARREST.

RECOVERY OF GOODS.

/ At mid-day on Friday in Willis Street, Wellington, Constables Cooper and Harold located a man for whom they had been searching for some time, and took him into custody. His name was William Mcßain. and he is held by the police on a charge concerning the daring burglary in the city warehouse of the Wellington Woollen Company on Sunday, February 18. *

At that time Mr. A. E. Donne, secretary of the company, received a mysterious telephone message, briefly informing him that his car " had been taken, and was At Island Bay." Later, it was discovered that the car, which had been left in the vehicle passage-way of the company's warehouse, had been taken, and that the big double-doors which shut it in were standing open. On the following Tuesday the car was discovered on the Beach road at Island, Bay, with the petrol tank empty and the battery exhausted.

It was surmised that entry to the building had been gained by means of slipping a catch in one of the front windows. Whoever took the car displayed familiar knowledge of tho secretary and his habits. From the warehouse various property was missing. In the care of the New Zealand Express Company they found two neat packagos of goods ready to be sent away to a certain address. The contents of these packages proved to be all the missing goods, and more which had not been renorted, and the total value of them is said to be over £200.

In the possession of Mcßain, -when he was arrested, was found a loaded revolver. The man appeared before tho Magistrate's Court subsequently, and was remanded, bail being refused. The property recovered is'said to include over 100 yds. of suiting, and something like 400 yds. of silk. The suiting includes a quantity of navy blue cloth, besides rolls of black silk, and of a fine navy blue worsted tweed. In addition other materials have been found in the packages.
