They repeatedly fell into the off-theory trap. Five out of the first six batsmen were caught in the slips, where Ryder was very smart. Liddicut bowled a good length. At one stage the score was four ■wickets for eight. Wallace was very fast. Eight men lost their wickets feeling for an off-ball. Chapman" caught Woodful beautifully low down at slip The Englishmen's total was passed after an hour's batting. Good length bowling at the start demanded caution by the batsmen. The Love-Ponsford partnership added 125 runs in 97 minutes. Ponsford, who was smartly stumped, hit six fours, and made many excellent off-drives. He gave no chances. Love, when 97, hit a ball hard to cover and ran foolishly. Chapman returned the ball beautifully to the wicketkeeper. Ryder sacrificed his wicket. He ran only when he saw that Love could not get back. The Englishmen joined in the applause of this unselfishness. Love's century occupied 141 minutes. He hit seven foul's.
