THE ALTERNATIVE VOTE
: » COMMONS BLOCKS BILL. LABOUR TILT AT PREMIER. A. and N.Z. LONDON. March 8. The House of Commons refused Dr. W. A. Chappie (Liberal) leave to introduce a Bill providing for the alternative vote in Parliamentary elections. Mr. S. 0. Roberts (Labour), pointing out that the successful candidate in the Mitcham by-election only obtained 38 per cent, of the votes polled, asked Mr. Bonar Law if he would introduce proportional representation before the general election. Mr Bonar Law: "I am not prepared to adopt the suggestion." Mr. Roberts: "Have you not a fellowfeeling for members returned -by a. minority of voters?" Mr. Bonar Law did not reply.
