SCHOOL MATERIALS.
REDUCTION OPPOSED. STRONG WELLINGTON PROTEST. A special meeting of the Wellington Headmasters' Association last week to discuss the position resulting from the delay in the receipt of supplies of material for handwork for the current school year, and the drastic curtailment of the quantity of material to be supplied. .■■ ./ . It was pointed out that, in ' accordance with the request of the Education Department, head teachers - throughout the ■ district made their requisitions before the end of May, 1922. It had been ascertained that after summarising the requisitions the Education Board bad iient a complete requisition for the supplies for the district to the department in June, 1922, but that up to the present the board had received only three lines of material out of the 30 for which requisition had boen made. The total quantity to be supplied would, it was slated, be from 25 to' 100 per cent, less than was said by head teachers to be necessary : for the work.: v After discussion, the meeting unanimously adopted the following resolution: "That the Wellington Headmasters' Association enter its strongest protest against the unsatisfactory and unbusinesslike position resulting from the departments failure to handle the supply of material for handwork classes for 1923. Not only did the department cut down the Education Board's requisition in every case from 25 per cent, to 100 per cent., but also at the present 'day it had delivered to the Education Board for distribution only three lines out of a total of 30 lines. This failure is not - only a serious matter for the schools, but is unfair to the board's officials whose duty it is to distribute the material. This association feels that if this is an example of the Education; Department's ability to supply handwork . material, it is very desirable that a reversion should be made to the old method of the Education Board's purchase and distribution."
