A CHRISTCHURCH PROTEST. ! <CITY COUNCIL'S RESOLUTION > [BY TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.] CHBISTCHUnCH. Monday. A letter from the organiser of the Canterbury Progress League was read at this evening's meeting of the City Council, asking it for suggestions or information | relating to the telephone service, and the matter of the proposed new charges. , Mr. Hervey moved that the council " should itself investigate the position. Mr. Crooke said that every local body should protest against the "stupid methods of the department in hampering busi- ■ ness." Mr. Herbert said the council's protest 1 would strengthen the general opposition to the new charges throughout New Zealand. ■ . Mr. D. G. Sullivan, M.P., said that, many people had great difficulty in getting telephones. Some had been on the waiting list for over two years.* He believed the reason why new subscribers were kept waiting was that the Government did not want to "scrap" more gear than was necessary when the automatic system was installed. - Mr. Hervey'a motion was carried.
